Meet the artisan

Karine Chevallier

Karine Chevallier came to perfumery through chemistry, graduating from ISIPCA in 1993 before training as a perfumer inside a fragrance composition house, the traditional path into the craft. In 2005 she struck out on her own, founding Olfactive Design, a studio where fine fragrance sits alongside art and pure olfactory experiment. What sets her apart is a restlessness with the standard brief. She has reconstructed the atmosphere of the Chauvet Cave in scent form and translated paintings into perfume, treating fragrance less as product and more as a language for interpreting the world. Her work now lives across some of niche perfumery's most distinct houses, among them Une Nuit Nomade, Gallivant, D'ORSAY, Maison Rebatchi, Masque Milano, and Thomas de Monaco. Places, images, ideas, she has built a career out of giving them a scent.
